Leigh Anne Tuohy Update: One Of The Teens Responds

The Belle Jar

One of the two teens involved in Leigh Anne Tuohy’s recent social media stunt has spoken out on Instagram (his name has been blurred out for privacy):

Person One aka Teen Leigh Anne Tuohy approached at KFC:

Yeah people don’t know what really happened because I actually had money I have a job and have had one for over a year I was gonna pay for my brother the other guy in the picture but he was insisting on waiting on his uncle but his phone was dying so we were charging it which is the reason we were in KFC in the first place.and the game was only a 3 min walk up the street I don’t see why she said bus fare that kinda ticked me off a little but the way she worded it is making us sound less fortunate and that isn’t the case at…

Faith Without Works is Dead like American Christianity

This past summer the church I attend went over this series of exploring various types of “spiritual disciplines”. I missed some of them, but they touched on some typical stuff. Praying. Reading the Bible. Some in refreshing ways, others pretty boring. In many ways, our church, even in its uniqueness, is a typcal white person church.

Sometimes I ask myself why I go to a church at all and then I remind myself I go for the community and the spiritual family I have there. If it wasn’t for specific people, I wouldn’t be in church at all (they know who they are). But nobody asked me what my favorite spiritual discipline is. It’s not praying. It’s not reading the Bible. I’m about to get really cynical here, but I’m in a bad place right now with my view of humanity, so bear with me. There’s a 5 gallon water jug at church to put loose change in and once a year the change is gathered together with all the other places that gathered loose change and the money all goes to building wells in places where they don’t have clean water. They partake in auctions that raise money for other humanitarian efforts worldwide. Sounds fantastic, right? It’s comfortable though, to throw change in a jug. It’s comfortable to make a quilt if its something you already do for an auction. It’s easy to attend an auction, spend your money for a good cause and eat delicious food. It’s the feel good type of Faith Works. It keeps you comfortable.

This past Sunday, I asked my church during an open mic time to join me in writing letters to leaders of the City of Cleveland and the State of Ohio to ask for justice for Tamir Rice. Only two people came up to me interested in helping. Here we are, an urban Mennonite Church with a side ministry dedicated to helping the children of the neighborhood and city with educational support to help kids succeed and only two people wanted to help me write letters. Racism is in our backyard LITERALLY – here is a chance for every white person in the congregation (all of them) to use their privilege for good for a 12 year old boy who no longer has a voice. But it feels better to drop pennies in a water jug for a far away place.

James 2:15-17 (NASB) If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and be filled,” and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that? Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.”

Matthew 5:43-44,46-47 (NASB) “You have heard that it was said ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy’. But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you… For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? If you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?”

Matthew 25:34-40 (NASB) “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of my father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink; I was a stranger and you invited me in; naked, and you clothed me; I was sick and you visited me; I was in prison, and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer Him, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you or thirsty and give you something to drink and when did we see you a stranger and invite you in or naked and clothe you? The King will answer and say to them, ‘truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of mine, even the least of them, you did it Me.”

I don’t want to call every single person in my congregation a hypocrite. Some ARE providing emotional support, articles, conversation, lending their voice of support for the revolution #BlackLivesMatter But most of them are silent. And its deafening.

And though the majority of white people simply do not understand how different their experiences with police officers differ from black people, I expect people who claim to follow the words of the man I posted above to have better awareness. I am not naïve, however. From my extensive background with fundamental Baptists and an evangelical college, I am well aware of how many Christians believe that saying a prayer for their sins and having intellectual conversations about the meaning of the Bible, dropping change into water jugs, and reading the Bible at home, and praying every day is following Jesus. But here’s a fucking newsflash: IT’S NOT. Christians spend so much focus on events like a virgin birth and death on a cross for significance and skip all the red letters in between. Faith without works is dead. Jesus calls us to reach out to those not in our comfort zone. He calls us to do good deeds to the least of the people on earth because it is the same as doing those good deeds directly to him. DIRECTLY. Black people don’t need white people as a savior, but they need us to walk hand in hand with them and tell our version of Rome that we will not stand for injustice. Samaria Rice doesn’t need a white savior, she just needs us to cry with her. It doesn’t matter what her past is. She is your sister, your neighbor. She is Jesus. But you just go ahead and lecture me after church about how people need to just obey the law as you drop your pennies in the water jug. WHATEVER HELPS YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT, CHRISTIANS.

We see what we want! It’s the gospel truth! These two were literally huddled over in a corner table nose to nose and the person with me said “I bet they are up to no good” well you know me… I walked over, told them to scoot over. After 10 seconds of dead silence I said so whats happening at this table? I get nothing.. I then explained it was my store and they should spill it… They showed me their phones and they were texting friends trying to scrape up $3.00 each for the high school basketball game! Well they left with smiles, money for popcorn and bus fare. We have to STOP judging people and assuming and pigeon holing people!…

Tamir Rice Justice: Indict Timothy Loehmann For Murder

I’ve not received any replies from my first letter to the leadership of the city of Cleveland or the Cuyahoga County’s Prosecutor’s office yet except for one city councilman who simply said “Thank you for your comments.” With the announcement Tamir Rice’s death was ruled as a homicide, I’ve written a new letter. It is pasted below. Some of it is copied from my first letter simply because I didn’t include Mike DeWine, John Kasich or Mary Taylor. I did not send the news links or surveillance video this time around either, but I have them pasted in this blog for your information. This blog isn’t to receive a pat on the back. The purpose is to educate and inspire YOU to write your own letter to these people and demand justice where justice failed for Eric Garner, John Crawford, Mike Brown and others. Don’t let Tamir Rice be another victim of his murderer getting off free!!! The contact info for everyone I sent this letter too is at the bottom.

Hello! White woman here. Why do I tell you I’m white? Because I want you to know that black people are not the only ones outraged at humans with badges getting away with murdering citizens for crimes where capital punishment without a trial isn’t the lawful consequence. In some cases, the citizens murdered by the human with the badge were committing no crime at all.

On Friday December 12th, it was announced Tamir Rice’s death was ruled as a homicide. That means the gun shot wound he died from is murder. That means Timothy Loehmann needs to be charged with murder. He needs to lose his badge without pay. There is no need to present all the evidence and let Timothy testify in front of a Grand Jury and bring up old laws that were declared unconstitutional like McColluch did in Missouri to somehow protect him from facing the consequences of his flawed decision.

It’s extremely clear in the surveillance video Timothy exited the police car with his gun already drawn at Tamir and shots fired within seconds. There is no way possible he told Tamir to put his hands up three times in such a short amount of time. There is no way Tamir had enough time to process in his mind what was even happening at that moment before he was shot by Timothy’s gun. There is no way possible you can justify Timothy Loehmann’s actions in those moments. So let’s just go ahead right now and consider the story put out by the police before the video was released was just another cover up to protect police officers from being held accountable for their actions. Let’s just go ahead and bust out the honest truth of the matter.

Don’t be on the wrong side of history just to protect police officers and your politics. No amount of money in the world will make people forget that you allowed a cop to murder a 12 year old child who was not committing a crime. Do you really want to go to sleep at night knowing his blood is on your hands? Have some integrity and do what is just and morally correct for this HUMAN whose life was extinguished without just cause.

The country waits for your morally correct decision.

Becky Murphy

I am White. And I am Angry.

In light of the three failed indictments for the police officers that killed John Crawford III, Michael Brown, and Eric Garner, I decided to take my anger and write to several people who work for the city of Cleveland, OH. I’ve lived in NE Ohio since I was 4 years old. I call upon the city of Cleveland to do what is right. Below is the letter I sent to the Mayor, the city’s Law Director, Cuyahoga County’s Prosecutor, the Civilian Police Review Board, the Chief of Police, and all 17 members of the Cleveland City Council. Below my letter, I have listed the contact information of all the individuals I sent the letter too. I searched Cleveland’s city website for this information. You are able to email the city council members. Everyone else has one of those online forms to fill out, so I chose to put my Harvey Milk stamps to use other than mailing bills. Use your voice. Make Cleveland hear you. Demand justice. #BlackLivesMatter

The letter:

12/4/2014

I am white. And I am angry.

For two weeks now, the nation has heard two cops not get indicted for any crime in two cases where at the very LEAST, excessive force was used that could have resulted in at least involuntary manslaughter charges and for the police officers to lose their badges. In a previous case in Beaver Creek, OH the cops that shot down John Crawford, who was not committing any crime, also were not indicted. I’m writing to you today in hopes Cleveland will not repeat the mistakes of Beaver Creek, Ferguson, and New York City.

Timothy Loehmann needs to lose his badge. Timothy Loehmann needs to be indicted on criminal charges for murder. I have three internet links at the end of this letter, just to show you there is clear evidence to support the statement I’ve just made.

First of all, it’s extremely clear in the surveillance video Timothy exited the police car with his gun already drawn at Tamir and shots fired within seconds of that moment. Let’s just go ahead and bust out the honest truth of the matter since there are literally thousands of people across the country protesting the last two botched police cover ups and subsequent media victim blaming/shamings that made national headlines.

It is also clear now that Timothy Loehmann shouldn’t even be a police officer per what happened to him when he was a cop for the city of Independence. How is it that normal businesses can background check people, check their references, and verify employers from an application or resume, but cops moving from one city to another don’t seem to have to go through any kind of review before they’re hired? This makes zero sense to me.

The internet links below contain information you may already be aware of, but I want you to know, I am aware. Millions of people are now aware. There are many issues plaguing Cleveland for decades and the lack of care for black citizens as if they’re less than human appears to be yet another issue. Don’t be on the wrong side of history just to protect police officers and your politics. People are getting fed up and you WILL be held accountable for your decisions through the voting booths. No amount of money in the world will make people forget that you allowed a cop to murder a 12 year old child who was not committing a crime. Do you really want to go to sleep at night knowing his blood is on your hands? Have some integrity and do what is just and morally correct for this HUMAN whose life you extinguished without just cause.

The country waits.
